When I was growing up I'm trying to remember if I ever made any characters in video games based on my teachers. I remember naming people in RPGs and stuff after my friends and family, but I don't remember ever using teachers....

The reason I bring this up is because there's a game for the DS over here called "Friend Collection" (トモダチコレックション), which is kinda like the Sims only with Miis and within the past few weeks I've had 3 different students of mine tell me that they've created a version of me in their game...

I'm going to miss these kids when I leave here....

1. < Wow you have green eyes! Do you see in different colors than me?>

2. 1st grader: < Do you live in America?>
Me: < No, I live here in Niimi.>
1年生: < How did you get here?>
Me: < Well, first I flew on an airplane from America... then I rode the shinkansen->
Her: < What's a shinkansen?>

3. Same girl: < Are there alligators in America?>
Niiru:< Yes, yes there are.>
Her:< How many?>
Me:< ...>
< Y'know I'm not really sure...>
Her:< Like 100?>
Me: < Yeah, that sounds about right.>

I love my job. :)

So that letter I wrote as Santa back in December?

Here were the replies I recieved (sitting on my desk when I got done with my 6th period class today):

In the letter from my 4th grader she said that since Santa gives presents to children every year, she decided to return the favor. I had forgotten that their family is in charge of one of the local shrines, this is a protective charm that they made. I'm assuming that it's in the shape of a cow since 2009 is the year of the cow (or bull or ox whatever you want to call it, it's all the same chinese character: 牛).

They actually used one of my battle ideas for Rock Band 2: http://www.rockband.com/battle-detail/week14_narr

Horray for my 15 milliseconds of fame. I only found out about it through some random guy sending me a message over Live asking how you submit battle ideas.

This morning I had 2 hours to spend at a kindergarten. I did a 45 minute lesson with about 40 kids, and afterwards was play time with everyone. At one point I was led over to the sandbox with a piece of cardboard lying in the middle (obviously covering a hole they dug). They told me to step on it, and I decided to play along, figuring it would be like 5 or 6 inches deep at most. So I put my foot on it and promptly fall into a hole that went above my knee. :(

The other wacky event for the day was after school, where I had a meeting with the head of the PTA. Apparently her 4th grader had written a letter to Santa and asked for a hoofprint from Rudolph (last year she got Santa's autograph). So the mother went to one of the local high schools and somehow managed to get a hoofprint from their pet(?) cow, and had me write a simple English message from Santa (since Rudolph is obviously a reindeer and can't write). My only hope is that she doesn't compare the handwriting to her letter from last year. :P

Got together last week at a friends house and was told to bring Rock Band 2. My friend Jamie commented that my character looks "pretty much exactly like how [she] would picture [me] as a rock star." I'm still not entirely sure how to take that:

On Saturday I went over to Okayama city and played in a Magic prerelease. I've played a couple games with another local ALT, but I haven't played competitively in years. Also for being in a language where I have the reading skills of approximately a 10 year old I was pretty satisfied with my results of 2 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw.

And in non-plastic guitar news, I'm now learning how to play the electric bass. After church yesterday, Mikiko (the preacher's daughter) was trying to work out the details of the setlist and such of the upcoming "Sowing Gospel Time" performance thingy on October 18th. One of the guitarists asked her if anyone was going to play the bass this time, I mentioned how I was interested in learning and was planning on buying one in a couple of months, which somehow lead to them teaching me the very basics and Mikiko loaning me hers. The three of us spent the afternoon practicing, and I think I have a handle down on the very-super-extremely basics. I can't do anything fancy yet, but as long as I keep practicing for a little bit every day I should be able to do alright come the 18th.
